The Deadbeat #3 by Jeremy Massie

The Deadbeat #3 by Jeremy Massie

This is sort of half review and half plug. I covered The Deadbeat issues 1, 2 and 2. 75 last year in my HeroesCon wrap up post.  I liked those three comics a lot and #3 is an great finale to the story.  I won't say much about the story because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  Massie's drawing in this book is loose and fun but dramatic when it needs to be.  That is a fair description of the writing as well.  Massie has a strong command of dialog and character interaction.  Sure these characters have superpowers but The Deadbeat is really about the drama between the two main characters and Massie nails that.   Massie is a very good artists and makes great looking comics but the thing that makes him scary good is that he can really,  really write.  I can't wait to read this whole thing as one book.  Oh, and by the way....

The Deadbeat is being collected as a graphic novel published by Alterna.  It is in the March Previews which can be found in your friendly neighborhood comic book shop.  It's going for a really low price so I do recommend you order a copy.  I am always hesitant to tell people how to spend their money here at file under other but with all the scary talk about Diamond's new policies making things harder on the small guys I thought I would go ahead and step up and encourage you fine folks to support what I know will be a good book.  Plus, I really feel no shame in recommending this graphic novel here at a minicomic site because the book still has a minicomic sized price.   You can check out a preview here at Alterna's website and don't forget to order your copy from Previews.  The code is MAR094045.

p.s.  My top secret mincomics investigative news hounds tell me that Massie will probably be at Fluke in Athens on April 4th.  The graphic novel won't be out yet but I'm sure Massie will have a lot of great minis for you.

Here Comes Madness

There is probably a correct term for the kind of comics Michael Kupperman makes but I just call them "crazy ass comics". It's one of my favorite genres and Kupperman is one of the best.  (Go ahead and ask me who my other favorites are.  I'd love to tell you all about them.) Here Comes Madness is his new blog where he is posting a lot of great comics and other funny stuff. As I've said before, I like blogs for webcomics because all I have to do is move my scrolly thing and I don't have to use any hand eye co-ordination to click an arrow. The comics are shoot-coffee-out-your-nose funny so go bookmark it now and thank God you can still get this kind of stuff for free. (Well, ya know, minus the cost of computer, introwebnet access, electricity etc.)

President Awesome

President Awesome is a new blog style webcomic by Dean Trippe and Evan Bryce.  There are only a few strips up so there is not a lot for me to "review" but I'm posting the link anyway for several reasons.   1) I like Dean Trippe.  2)  That's an awesome title.  3) I like blog format web comics because I don't have to click any buttons.  I can just use my scrolly thing. 4) So far it appears to be satirizing peoples' reactions to or perceptions of "President Awesome" more than the just the person in question.  I think that is pretty clever and will be more self-sustaining than the other option.  5) It looks really nice so far.  I like everything about the way Bryce draws.  But, as I usually say with webcomics, you don't have to take my word for it.  Just click away.

Webcomics: Road Crew by Tommie Kelly

This webcomic starts off as a bare bones rock dude equivalent of what Penny Arcade is to gamers.  If that were all it did that would be fine by me.  I once was a rock dude and can relate to the situations.  I found a lot of laughs in this strip and was pretty eager to go from page to page looking for more.  If you start the strip from the beginning (which I recommend) you will see that it grows beyond just the obvious jokes and fan pandering and that the characters actually turn into, well, characters.  The art gets progressively better as well but I don't' really care about that all that much.  Sure I like nice looking comics but a better mastery of photoshop does not make the strips any funnier.   It does have a few spots were it becomes more soap opera than comedy but those are pretty strong strips too.  I think I prefer the simpler comedy strips but each entry is good enough for me to hit the "next" arrow.
